Tope Oguntuase

Born in November 1970 to a kingmaking family in Oke Ayedun Ekiti, Ekiti Sate , Nigeria , Tope was encouraged by his parents to join the Nigerian Army to become a soldier in July 1991 against his wish (to study Art). He also attended Basic Printing Course in Nigerian Army Ordnance Training School , Ojo, Lagos in 1993. He obtained Ordinary National Diploma, Art & Design from Lagos State Polytechnic in 1996. He did his one-year industrial attachment under Mr. Abiodun Olaku before proceeding to Yaba College of Technology to obtain HND Painting in 1997. Tope has since taken part in a number of group exhibitions including Luminous (2004), an annual Chalk Pastel exhibition organized by Mydrim Gallery, Ikoyi Lagos. He studied Computer at Hands-On Computer School, Onipanu, Lagos in 2001.

He also trained as a Confidential Secretary at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA) Apapa, Lagos between 2002 and 2004.
Tope has executed portrait paintings of some dignitaries such as Late Brigadier-General Bamidele Fagbemi of Army Headquarters Ordnance Services, Chief Engineer Owoade, Dr. Peter Ayodeji Fayose, former Executive Governor of Ekiti State and Mr. S. A. Adegbola, Head, Secretarial Department in NASFA etc. Oguntuase still serves in Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps.

Tope’s first encounter with Mufu Onifade occured in 1997 at the Lagos State Polytechnic during the Art Week Celebration of the Art & Design Students Association. Mufu’s lecture on the importance of uniqueness and ingenuity to Art attracted him to Araism technique. Tope, later in 1997, joined Mufu’s Studio then at Ajibulu-Moniya Gallery to learn the technicalities of Araism, which he applied fro the excution of his final project at Yabatech. He is a founding member of Araism Movement.
